Shavone Charles is leaving her diversity and inclusion communications post at TikTok to launch a fashion series for New York Fashion Week, among other creative ventures.
Charles, who held the position of Global Head of Diversity Inclusion and Multicultural Communications at the social media platform since 2021, will launch a Future of Fashion series in partnership with Ford Models Digital and Soho House in New York City.
Before joining TikTok, the former Ford signed model completed communications stints at Twitter, Instagram and other major tech companies. Charles is also the founder of a creative collective, Future of Creatives, which is focused on amplifying women of color and other underrepresented creators. Future of Creatives was born from the belief that diverse creatives deserve more than visibility we need ownership and a permanent seat at the table. Our mission is to build sustainable, inclusive, culture-forward spaces, products, and experiences that not only celebrate multidisciplinary talent, but also ensure they hold real influence and stake in shaping the future of our industries. At its heart, Future of Creatives is about community, storytelling, and delivering on the promise of a more equitable creative industry, Charles said in a statement.
The Future of Fashion series will spotlight visionary creatives and cultural disruptors reshaping the fashion industry, according to Charles, while also encouraging inclusivity, innovation and emerging voices.
Charles was hired by TikTok as its first-ever diversity and inclusion communications exec to raise the profile of underrepresented creators. TikTok had looked to improve its relationship with Black creators after a number of creators havespoken out about not receiving credit or recognitionfor their creation of viral trends on the platform.
Charles exit coincides with a host of major U.S. companies cutting back on their diversity, equity and inclusion programs after Donald Trump returned to the White House for his second administration.
In addition, the U.S. market future of the popular social video app owned by ChinasByteDanceis also up in the air as the Trump administration has offered a series of extensions to allow an American buyer to be found.
