Keep the shovels handy, Chicagoans.

Wednesday’s wintry mix is expected to drop 2 to 4 inches of snow on the Chicago region by the afternoon, just enough to slow people's morning commutes. Lingering lake effect snow could make the evening rush hour an equal exercise in patience, according to the National Weather Service.

After a relatively quiet start to the year, weather-wise, chances for additional accumulation remain in the forecast daily through the weekend. So maybe those cross-country skis will finally see some action.

And a quickreminder about salt:A little goes a long way. A 12-ounce mug of salt is enough for a 20-foot driveway or 250 square feet of sidewalk. If there’s salt left on the ground after the ice melts, too much was used. Instead of letting this excess leach into the ground or sewers, sweep it up.
