A group of protesters exercised their freedom of speech directly at FCC Chairman Brendan Carr on Tuesday.

Members of Our Revolution a political action committee started by Bernie Sanders in 2016 for his first presidential run staged a disruption inside the Federal Communications Commissions first open meeting since Carr controversially (and illegally) pushed ABC affiliates to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live! earlier this month.

An email went out on Tuesday morning stating that Our Revolution, along with Public Citizen and Free Press, is staging an action and disruption inside the FCCs open meeting, demanding Commissioner Brendan Carr resign for enabling Trumps censorship agenda, greenlighting dangerous media consolidation, and serving the interests of billionaire oligarchs. Carr has sided with corporate power brokers like the Ellisons and Murdochs, working to create media monopolies that silence independent voices and undermine free speech, the email sent to The Hollywood Reporter continued. Activists will directly confront Carr during the meeting and call out his role in eroding democracy.

Following the protest, THR spoke with Our Revolution political directorPaco Fabian, one of two people escorted out of the FCC meeting by security for loudly chanting, Fire Carr, the censorship czar!

Our Revolution claims eight million members. About a dozen showed up this morning. To be fair to the group, the protest was at an early call time that was thrown together rather late; plus, Fabian said, some of his other activists were taking part in simultaneous protests targeting the government shutdown.

This was just us using our free speech rights to tell Brendan Carr that he cant be using threats from his position as FCC chair to impinge those rights, Fabian said.

Fabian says he heard the FCC was very nervous about something happening. Fabian says he was told (though he could not recall by whom) the FCC practiced yesterday what to do in the event of such a disruption, and that the government entity hired extra security for this mornings meeting.

Theyre not dumb, Fabian said. They know their boss has been controversial since the last time they had a public meeting, and so they were expecting something.

Our Revolution is also concerned about media consolidation, citing the pending merger between Nexstar and Tegna.

I cant speak to what Brendan Carr is thinking or what kind of conversations hes been having, but given the way this current administration has been operating on a sort of pay-to-play basis, its not out of the ordinary that Nexstar decided to take Kimmel off the air on their stations because they want to be in the good graces of both Trump and the FCC, so that they all approve this merger, Fabian said.

Fabian says Carr definitely saw their signs and heard their chants, but he just sat in his chair and didnt make a face or anything.

Thats when Fabian and another member of the group got kicked out for chanting the loudest. Their forced exit was amicable, Fabian said. There were no arrests, they were simply told not to reenter the building.
