Paramount has made a high-profile hire from Meta Platforms Inc. as it seeks to transform itself into a company at the cutting edge of both technology and entertainment.

The company says that Dane Glasgow will join as chief product officer, reporting directly to CEO David Ellison, while also working closely with direct-to-consumer chief Cindy Holland.

Glasgow was most recently vp of product management at Facebook, where he led the teams responsible for Reels, Marketplace, feed, stories and other critical features. He also previously worked at Microsoft and eBay, and was a vp at Google leading the team responsible for Google Maps and Google Earth. His hiring underscores the extent to which Ellison wants his Paramount to lean more into technology so that the company can compete with the likes of YouTube, TikTok and Netflix.

Unless you can build a tech product that is truly competitive with whats coming out of Silicon Valley, you cant compete, Ellison told reporters last month. And that has been one of the big problems thats been facing legacy media, is they dont actually understand that skill set and how critical that is, and that it is actually a combination of great content working with tech product hand in hand, that is how you actually get this business growing and scaling again, and you need both.

Glasgow, a serial founder and Big Tech veteran, may be just the person to help the company push further in that direction.
