Former Rolling Stone CEO Gus Wenner is launching a new investment firm, Wenner Media Ventures, and the first investment is in the company behind the popular social video show Track Star, which now has millions of followers across platforms like YouTube, TikTok and Instagram.
Wenner will make a strategic investment in the company, Public Opinion, and become its executive chairman, with plans to accelerate the brands already dramatic growth by expanding its lineup, launching original series led by a new wave of creators, journalists, filmmakers, and music personalities, the company says. Track Star began as a short-form game show, challenging passersby on the street to name a song after listening to a snippet, But it has since become something of a pop culture darling to the music industry, with artists and celebrities making appearances in an interview spinoff, a live concert series, a podcast and the news franchise Public Opinion.
Mariah Carey, Ed Sheeran, Oprah, Mark Zuckerberg, Olivia Rodrigo, Zohran Mamdani, and Jimmy Fallon have all appeared on its programming. The company was founded by CEO Jack Coyne, VP of creativeHenry Kornaros, and VP of productionKieran Coyne.
We are aiming to build a new kind of media company, said Gus Wenner in a statement. In short order, Jack, Henry, and Kieran have built one of the most influential brands in music and some of the most watched shows online. Our goal is to ambitiously scale that vision and grow Track Star into the MTV of today.
Partnering with Gus is about building the next great media business and a real home for music lovers, added Coyne.Music has always been where people go to find community and feel understood, but somewhere along the way, the way we talk about it lost its depth. We are building something that feels human, serves artists, and gives fans a real connection.
Public Opinion is the first investment from Wenner Media Ventures, which was founded earlier this year.
