David Travis, a former home video executive and the husband of Family Affair actress Kathy Garver, has died. He was 79.
Travis died Aug. 30 at the Motion Picture Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills of metastasized colorectal cancer, his family announced.
Born on March 14, 1946, in Omaha, Nebraska, David Scott Travis managed a rental car agency while in high school, then became president of his class at San Jose State University, where he earned a degree in business. He became G.M. at Sunnyvale, California-based General Recorded Tape, a company that manufactured reel-to-reel, 8-track and cassette tapes and achieved success in the 1960s and 70s by acquiring record labels including Chess Records and Janus Records.
As the tape technology faded, he joined the game company Atari in a sales position and traveled around the world to enhance the home recording market overseas.
He continued his career as a marketing manager and vice president of marketing for three major companies before retiring in 2019.
An avid tennis and golf player who competed on the sports and entertainment circuit in matches produced by David Mirisch, Travis was known as a great competitor as well as a kind and giving person who was sensitive to peoples needs and never harsh nor condescending to anyone, his family noted.
He and Garver married in 1981. She is best known for her portrayal of Cissy, the oldest of the three orphans adopted by Brian Keiths wealthy bachelor character, on the 1966-71 CBS sitcom Family Affair.
Survivors also include sons Scott and Reid and daughter-in-love Megan.
