A Chicago police officer was shot and wounded Monday afternoon on the city’s Near North Side.

The shooting occurred in the 1000 block of West North Avenue at around 3:30 p.m. The wounded officer was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

The incident began after an altercation inside Ulta Beauty, according to Police Superintendent David Brown.

“The struggle continued out into the parking lot. A second officer arrived. This offender then fired three rounds from their gun at our officer, striking him once and the offender was taken into custody by the other officer who was there,” Brown said. “And the gun was recovered.”

The officer was struck in the face, but it was a "through-and-through" injury, Brown said. An investigation remains ongoing.

No officers fired their weapons, according to Brown. He would not provide a work history for the victim officer.

“We’re just grateful that our officer is in non-life-threatening condition at this point,” Brown said, “and we’re asking the public to continue their prayers for our officer and all the officer for the city of Chicago.”
