Euphoria actor Austin Abrams has emerged as the choice to star in Sony Pictures and Zach Creggers reboot of horror action movie Resident Evil.

Cregger, the filmmaker who became part of the horror genres new generation thanks for his breakout Barbarian, wrote the script and is directing the feature.

He is readying for the release his follow-up to Barbarian, an ensemble horror piece titled Weapons. Abrams makes up part of the cast, which includes Josh Brolin and Julia Garner. Resident Evil would mark a reunion between the two, should any deal make. Sony is moving fast on Resident Evil and a summer shoot in Europe is being planned. Cregger is said to already be scouting.

Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film. Constantins Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainments Roy Lee (Barbarian,) and Miri Yoon (Weapons) as well as PlayStation Productions are also producing.

The previous Resident Evilmovies, based on the Capcom video games, were a mix of horror, sci-fi and action genres and followed the adventures of a heroine who fights zombies and the Umbrella Corporation, the bio warfare company that let loose the monsters.

However, sources say the new project is decidedly on the horror track. It is also said to have elements of a wilderness survival thriller. It is co-written by Shay Hatten, who worked onJohn Wick: Chapter 4and Zack SnydersArmy of the Dead.

Sony had no comment.

Nicole Brown will oversee the project for Sonys Columbia Pictures.

Abrams was last seen in Wolfs, the Apple TV action comedy starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

The rising player has been acting since he was 11 and has accrued appearances on The Walking Dead and This Is Us. On the film side, he has appeared in Scary Stories We Tell in the Dark, Amazon YA romance Chemical Hearts and Netflix black comedy Do Revenge.

Abrams, who played Ethan Daley on HBOs Euphoria, is repped by WME and Amplified.
