Salivary Amylase

This enzyme starts breaking down complex carbohydrates, such as starch, into smaller molecules called maltose. Salivary amylase continues its action until it reaches the acidic environment of the stomach, where its activity is halted.

Pancreatic Amylase

Intestinal Enzymes

The final stage of carbohydrate digestion occurs in the small intestine, where various enzymes are present to complete the process. These enzymes include sucrase, lactase, and maltase, which further break down maltose, sucrose, and lactose, respectively, into their individual sugar components, such as glucose, fructose, and galactose.

Once the carbohydrates are broken down into their simplest forms, they can be easily absorbed through the intestinal lining and transported to the cells throughout the body. Here, they are used as a primary source of energy or stored for later use.
