Definition: What is Zen meditation?

Zen meditation, also known as Zazen, is a form of meditation that originated in Zen Buddhism. It is a practice that aims to cultivate mindfulness, concentration, and insight by sitting in a specific posture and focusing on the breath or a specific object of meditation.

Unlike other forms of meditation that may involve guided imagery or chanting, Zen meditation emphasizes the practice of simply sitting and observing the present moment without judgment or attachment. It is often practiced in a quiet and serene environment, such as a meditation hall or a peaceful outdoor setting.

The practice of Zen meditation involves assuming a stable and comfortable posture, typically sitting cross-legged on a cushion or a meditation bench. The spine is kept straight, and the hands are placed in a specific position, such as the cosmic mudra or the lotus mudra.

During the meditation session, practitioners focus their attention on the breath, counting the inhalations and exhalations or simply observing the natural flow of breath without any manipulation. Thoughts, emotions, and sensations may arise, but the practitioner is encouraged to acknowledge them without getting caught up in them and gently redirect the focus back to the breath.

Through consistent practice, Zen meditation aims to develop a deep sense of presence and awareness, allowing practitioners to gain insights into the nature of their mind and reality. It is believed to promote relaxation, stress reduction, and overall well-being.
