Role of Selenium in Reducing Oxidative Stress

Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the body’s ability to neutralize them with antioxidants. This imbalance can lead to cellular damage and contribute to the development of various chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders.

1. Selenium as an Antioxidant

Selenium is an essential trace mineral that plays a crucial role in reducing oxidative stress. It acts as a cofactor for several antioxidant enzymes, including glutathione peroxidases and thioredoxin reductases. These enzymes work by neutralizing ROS and preventing their harmful effects on cells and tissues.

2. Selenium and Glutathione Peroxidases

Glutathione peroxidases are a family of enzymes that require selenium for their activity. These enzymes catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxide and lipid hydroperoxides, which are highly reactive ROS, into less harmful compounds. By doing so, they protect cells from oxidative damage and maintain their normal function.

3. Selenium and Thioredoxin Reductases

Thioredoxin reductases are another group of enzymes that depend on selenium for their function. 4. Selenium and Selenoproteins

Selenoproteins are a unique group of proteins that contain selenium in the form of the amino acid selenocysteine. These proteins have diverse functions, including regulating redox signaling, modulating immune responses, and protecting against oxidative stress-induced DNA damage.

5. Selenium and Cellular Defense Mechanisms

By supporting the activity of antioxidant enzymes and selenoproteins, selenium enhances the body’s cellular defense mechanisms against oxidative stress. This, in turn, reduces the risk of oxidative damage to cells and tissues and promotes overall health and longevity.
