Relationship between Pollution and Premature Skin Aging

Pollution refers to the presence of harmful substances in the environment, such as air pollutants, chemicals, and toxins. Premature skin aging, also known as extrinsic aging, refers to the accelerated aging of the skin caused by external factors, rather than natural aging processes.

Effects of Pollution on Skin Aging

Pollution can significantly contribute to premature skin aging through various mechanisms:

1. Oxidative Stress

Pollutants in the environment, such as particulate matter (PM), heavy metals, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) when they come into contact with the skin. Wear sunscreen with a high SPF and broad-spectrum protection to shield the skin from UV radiation, which can exacerbate the effects of pollution on skin aging.

4. Barrier Repair

Use moisturizers and skincare products that help strengthen the skin barrier and enhance its ability to defend against pollutants. Look for ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide.
