The ozone layer plays a crucial role in protecting the Earth and its inhabitants from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

UV radiation is a type of electromagnetic radiation emitted by the sun. It is divided into three categories: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVC radiation is the most harmful, but fortunately, it is almost entirely absorbed by the Earth’s atmosphere and does not reach the surface. UVA and UVB radiation, however, can penetrate the atmosphere and reach the Earth’s surface.

The ozone layer acts as a shield against UV radiation by absorbing most of the incoming UVB rays. Ozone molecules are highly effective at absorbing UVB radiation, preventing it from reaching the Earth’s surface in significant amounts. This is crucial because UVB radiation is known to cause various health issues, including sunburn, skin cancer, cataracts, and immune system suppression.
