These valves open to allow blood flow from the atria to the ventricles and close to prevent backflow. The semilunar valves, including the pulmonary valve and aortic valve, separate the ventricles from the major blood vessels. They open to allow blood to be pumped out of the heart and close to prevent blood from flowing back into the ventricles.

Function of the Heart’s Electrical System

The heart has its own electrical system that controls the timing and coordination of its contractions. The sinoatrial (SA) node, located in the right atrium, initiates the electrical impulses that regulate the heart’s rhythm. These impulses travel through the atria, causing them to contract. The impulses then reach the atrioventricular (AV) node, which delays the signal before transmitting it to the ventricles. This delay allows the atria to fully contract before the ventricles contract, ensuring efficient blood flow.
