Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a comprehensive methodology used to evaluate the environmental impact of materials throughout their entire life cycle, from extraction or production to disposal or recycling. It is a systematic approach that takes into account all stages of a product’s life, including raw material acquisition, manufacturing, distribution, use, and end-of-life management.

LCA provides a holistic perspective by considering the environmental impacts associated with each stage, such as energy consumption, resource depletion, greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, and waste generation. By quantifying and assessing these impacts, LCA enables decision-makers to make informed choices and identify opportunities for improving the environmental performance of materials and products.

The assessment process involves four main steps:

  • Goal and Scope Definition: Clearly defining the purpose and boundaries of the assessment, including the functional unit (e.g., per kilogram of material) and the system boundaries (e.g., cradle-to-gate or cradle-to-grave).
  • Inventory Analysis: Collecting data on the inputs and outputs of each life cycle stage, including energy and material flows, emissions, and waste generation.
  • Impact Assessment: Evaluating the potential environmental impacts associated with the collected data, using established impact categories such as climate change, acidification, eutrophication, and resource depletion.
  • Interpretation: Analyzing and interpreting the results to identify hotspots, prioritize improvement opportunities, and communicate the findings to stakeholders.

    LCA is widely used in sustainable development and environmental management to support decision-making processes, product design, policy development, and eco-labeling schemes. It helps to promote the adoption of more sustainable materials and practices by providing a science-based approach to assess and compare their environmental performance.
