Definition: What is neurodegeneration?

Neurodegeneration refers to the progressive and irreversible loss of structure and function of neurons in the brain and spinal cord. It is a complex process that involves the degeneration and death of neurons, leading to the impairment of cognitive, motor, and sensory functions.

Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), are characterized by the accumulation of abnormal proteins, oxidative stress, inflammation, and the formation of toxic aggregates in the brain.

The exact causes of neurodegeneration are not fully understood, but they are believed to involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Age is also a significant risk factor, as neurodegenerative diseases are more prevalent in older individuals.

The symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases vary depending on the specific condition but commonly include memory loss, impaired movement and coordination, changes in behavior and mood, and difficulties with speech and swallowing.

Currently, there is no cure for most neurodegenerative diseases, and treatment options focus on managing symptoms and slowing down disease progression. Research efforts are underway to better understand the underlying mechanisms of neurodegeneration and develop effective therapies to prevent or halt the progression of these debilitating conditions.
