Definition: What is histone modification?

Histone modification refers to the chemical alterations that occur on the histone proteins, which are responsible for packaging DNA into a compact structure called chromatin. These modifications can include the addition or removal of various chemical groups, such as acetyl, methyl, phosphoryl, or ubiquitin groups, to specific amino acids on the histone tails.

These modifications play a crucial role in regulating gene expression and chromatin structure, ultimately influencing various cellular processes, including DNA replication, repair, and transcription. Histone modifications can either activate or repress gene expression, depending on the specific modification and its location within the chromatin.
