Fertility Awareness-Based Method (FAM)
Fertility Awareness-Based Method (FAM) is a natural method of family planning that involves tracking and interpreting various signs and symptoms of a woman’s menstrual cycle to determine her fertile and infertile days. It is also known as natural family planning or natural contraception.Understanding Fertility Awareness-Based Method
FAM is based on the understanding that a woman’s fertility is not constant throughout her menstrual cycle. By observing and recording changes in her body, such as basal body temperature, cervical mucus consistency, and changes in the cervix itself, a woman can identify the times when she is most likely to conceive.Basal body temperature (BBT) is the body’s lowest resting temperature, which increases slightly after ovulation due to the release of progesterone. By measuring her BBT every morning before getting out of bed, a woman can detect the slight rise in temperature that indicates ovulation has occurred.

Cervical mucus is another important indicator of fertility. As a woman approaches ovulation, her cervical mucus becomes more abundant, slippery, and stretchy, resembling raw egg whites. This fertile mucus helps sperm travel through the cervix and into the fallopian tubes, increasing the chances of fertilization.
In addition to BBT and cervical mucus, changes in the cervix itself can also provide valuable information about fertility. During the fertile phase of the menstrual cycle, the cervix becomes softer, higher, and more open, allowing easier passage for sperm.
Effectiveness of Fertility Awareness-Based Method
The effectiveness of FAM as a method of contraception depends on the accuracy of tracking and interpreting the various fertility signs. When used correctly and consistently, FAM can be highly effective, with a failure rate of less than 1%. However, it requires a high level of commitment, diligence, and understanding of one’s own body.See also Why is it important for men to understand the side effects and risks of different contraceptives?
It is important to note that FAM does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Therefore, it is recommended to use barrier methods of contraception, such as condoms, in addition to FAM if protection against STIs is desired.

FAM offers several benefits for individuals and couples who choose to use it as a method of family planning:- It is a natural and hormone-free method of contraception.
