What Causes Water to be Hard?

Definition: Water hardness refers to the concentration of minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium, dissolved in water. When water contains high levels of these minerals, it is considered hard water. The hardness of water is measured in grains per gallon (gpg) or parts per million (ppm).

Causes of Water Hardness
