Symptoms of Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It primarily affects the genital tract, but can also infect the rectum, throat, and eyes. The symptoms of gonorrhea can vary depending on the site of infection and the individual’s immune response.

1. Genital Symptoms:

– In men, symptoms may include a burning sensation during urination, increased frequency of urination, and a white, yellow, or green discharge from the penis.

– In women, symptoms may include painful urination, increased vaginal discharge, and vaginal bleeding between periods.

2. Rectal Symptoms:

– Both men and women who engage in receptive anal intercourse can develop symptoms of rectal gonorrhea. These may include itching, pain, bleeding, and discharge from the rectum.

3. Throat Symptoms:

– Gonorrhea can also infect the throat, usually as a result of oral sex with an infected partner. Symptoms may include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck.

4. Eye Symptoms:

– In rare cases, gonorrhea can cause conjunctivitis (pink eye) if infected genital fluids come into contact with the eyes. Symptoms may include redness, itching, discharge, and sensitivity to light.

It is important to note that some individuals infected with gonorrhea may not experience any symptoms at all. This is known as asymptomatic gonorrhea and can still be transmitted to sexual partners. Therefore, regular testing and safe sexual practices are crucial in preventing the spread of this infection.

If you suspect you have been exposed to gonorrhea or are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention promptly. Gonorrhea can be easily diagnosed through laboratory testing and is typically treated with antibiotics.
