Types of Geraniums

Geraniums, also known as Pelargoniums, are a popular flowering plant that belongs to the Geraniaceae family. They are widely cultivated for their vibrant flowers and attractive foliage. There are several different types of geraniums, each with its own unique characteristics and growing requirements.

1. Zonal Geraniums (Pelargonium x hortorum)

Zonal geraniums are the most common type of geraniums found in gardens and nurseries. They are characterized by their distinct zonal markings on the leaves, which are usually dark green with a lighter-colored band. Zonal geraniums produce large clusters of flowers in various colors, including red, pink, white, and purple.

2. Ivy Geraniums (Pelargonium peltatum)

Ivy geraniums are known for their trailing habit and ivy-like leaves. They are excellent for hanging baskets and containers, as their cascading growth creates a beautiful display. Ivy geraniums produce small, single or double flowers in shades of pink, red, lavender, and white.

3. Regal Geraniums (Pelargonium x domesticum)

Regal geraniums, also called Martha Washington geraniums, are known for their large, showy flowers and ruffled petals. They are often grown as indoor plants or in protected outdoor areas, as they are more sensitive to cold temperatures compared to other geranium types. Regal geraniums come in a wide range of colors, including shades of pink, purple, red, and white.

4. Scented Geraniums (Pelargonium spp.)

Scented geraniums are prized for their aromatic leaves, which release a pleasant fragrance when touched or crushed. They come in a variety of scents, including rose, lemon, mint, and apple. Scented geraniums are often used in potpourri, herbal teas, and as natural air fresheners.

5. Stellar Geraniums (Pelargonium x domesticum ‘Stellar Series’)

Stellar geraniums are a relatively new hybrid variety that combines the best traits of zonal and regal geraniums. They have large, semi-double flowers with vibrant colors and a compact growth habit. Stellar geraniums are known for their excellent heat tolerance and disease resistance.

These are just a few examples of the many types of geraniums available to gardeners. Each type has its own unique beauty and characteristics, making them a versatile choice for adding color and charm to gardens, containers, and indoor spaces.
