GOTS Certification Criteria for Materials

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is a globally recognized certification that ensures the organic status of textiles, from the harvesting of raw materials to the final product. To be GOTS certified, materials must meet a set of stringent criteria that promote sustainability, environmental responsibility, and social welfare throughout the textile supply chain.

1. Organic Fiber Content

The GOTS certification requires that a minimum of 95% of the textile’s fibers must be organically produced. This means that the fibers are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or any other harmful chemicals.

2. Restricted Substances

GOTS prohibits the use of certain chemicals and substances that are known to be hazardous to human health and the environment. These include heavy metals, formaldehyde, chlorine bleaches, and certain azo dyes. The certification ensures that the materials used in the textile production process comply with these strict restrictions.

3. Environmental Impact

GOTS certification requires that the production processes used for materials have a minimal impact on the environment. This includes implementing measures to conserve water and energy, as well as minimizing waste generation and pollution. The certification also encourages the use of renewable resources and promotes biodiversity conservation.

4. Social Criteria

GOTS places a strong emphasis on social welfare and fair labor practices. The certification requires that the materials are produced in facilities that provide safe and hygienic working conditions for employees. It also ensures that workers are paid fair wages, have the right to freedom of association, and are not subjected to any form of forced or child labor.

5. Traceability and Transparency

GOTS certification requires a comprehensive documentation system to ensure traceability throughout the supply chain. This means that all stages of production, from the sourcing of raw materials to the final product, must be clearly identified and documented. The certification also promotes transparency by allowing independent third-party verification of compliance with the GOTS criteria.

By meeting these criteria, materials can obtain GOTS certification, providing consumers with the assurance that the textile products they purchase are produced in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.
