Common Pests and Diseases Affecting Purple Kohlrabi

Pests:

  • Aphids: These small, soft-bodied insects feed on the sap of kohlrabi plants, causing stunted growth and distorted leaves. They can be controlled by introducing natural predators or using insecticidal soaps.
  • Cabbage Worms: The larvae of cabbage white butterflies, cabbage worms chew on the leaves of purple kohlrabi, leaving behind large holes. Handpicking and using organic insecticides can help manage their population.
  • Slugs and Snails: These slimy pests feed on the leaves and stems of kohlrabi, causing extensive damage. Creating barriers, such as copper tape, and removing hiding places can help control their presence.
  • Flea Beetles: These small, jumping beetles chew tiny holes in the leaves of kohlrabi, resulting in a characteristic “shot-hole” appearance. Row covers and insecticides can be used to prevent infestations.

Diseases:

  • Clubroot: This soil-borne disease causes swelling and distortion of the roots, leading to stunted growth and wilting of the plant. Crop rotation and soil amendments can help manage clubroot.
  • Downy Mildew: A fungal disease that appears as yellowish patches on the leaves, downy mildew can cause defoliation and reduced yield. Fungicides and proper plant spacing can help prevent its spread.
  • Black Rot: This bacterial disease causes blackened veins and yellowing of leaves, eventually leading to plant death. Crop rotation and removal of infected plants are essential for controlling black rot.
  • Powdery Mildew: A fungal infection that forms a white, powdery coating on the leaves, powdery mildew can hinder photosynthesis and weaken the plant. Fungicides and proper air circulation can help prevent its occurrence.
