Common Pests and Diseases Affecting Kohlrabi

Pests:

  • Aphids: These small, soft-bodied insects feed on the sap of kohlrabi plants, causing stunted growth and distorted leaves. They can be controlled through the use of insecticidal soaps or by introducing natural predators like ladybugs.
  • Cabbage Worms: The larvae of cabbage butterflies, cabbage worms chew on the leaves of kohlrabi, resulting in ragged holes and reduced plant vigor. Handpicking the worms or using organic insecticides can help manage their population.
  • Slugs and Snails: These slimy creatures feed on the leaves and stems of kohlrabi, leaving behind irregular holes and slime trails. Creating barriers like copper tape or using organic slug baits can help control their presence.
  • Root Maggots: The larvae of certain flies, root maggots tunnel into the roots of kohlrabi, causing wilting and stunted growth. Crop rotation, applying beneficial nematodes, or using row covers can help prevent infestations.

Diseases:

  • Clubroot: A soil-borne disease, clubroot causes the roots of kohlrabi to become swollen and deformed. Planting resistant varieties and maintaining proper soil pH can help prevent its occurrence.
  • Downy Mildew: This fungal disease appears as yellowish patches on the leaves of kohlrabi, eventually turning them brown and causing defoliation. Regularly inspecting plants and applying appropriate fungicides can help control its spread.
  • Black Rot: Black rot is a bacterial disease that causes dark, V-shaped lesions on the leaves of kohlrabi. Infected plants should be removed and destroyed to prevent further spread.
  • Powdery Mildew: Powdery mildew appears as a white, powdery coating on the leaves of kohlrabi, inhibiting photosynthesis and reducing plant vigor. Fungicides and proper plant spacing can help manage its impact.
