1. Decreased Sleep Efficiency

One of the most noticeable changes in sleep patterns as we age is a decrease in sleep efficiency. Sleep efficiency refers to the amount of time spent asleep compared to the total time spent in bed. Older adults often experience more fragmented sleep, characterized by frequent awakenings throughout the night. This can lead to a decrease in the overall quality and duration of sleep.

2. Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome

Another common change is the development of advanced sleep phase syndrome. This condition causes individuals to feel sleepy earlier in the evening and wake up earlier in the morning. While these changes in sleep patterns are considered normal with aging, it is essential to prioritize good sleep hygiene and seek medical advice if sleep disturbances significantly impact daily functioning and quality of life. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, creating a comfortable sleep environment, and practicing relaxation techniques can all contribute to better sleep as we age.
