Week in Review: Accusations, Big Spending in Chicago Mayoral Race
Week in Review: Accusations, Big Spending in Chicago Mayoral Race-April 2024
Apr 17, 2026 9:26 AM

Chicago’s Election Day is just days away, and the mayoral campaign is a toss-up between the four frontrunners. Mayor Lori Lightfoot says that when Paul Vallas tells voters they need to “take our city back,” it is the ultimate dog whistle.

Meanwhile, Vallas unveils a new ad touting his support of the LGBTQ community, despite his multiple engagements with the transphobic and homophobic Awake Illinois and saying the group’s president should run for governor. A surging Brandon Johnson is slamming Lightfoot in commercials for wanting to defund police. In his latest campaign ad, Jesús “Chuy” García talks about his son being in a gang. And former mayoral rival Susana Mendoza accuses Lightfoot of betraying Chicago cops disabled by COVID-19 — including her brother. The mayor says she has no control over the pension board and shouldn’t.

In other political news, alderpeople rip Chicago Police Department brass over keeping the officer with ties to two right-wing groups, the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis speaks in Elmhurst to an FOP-invited crowd.

There’s less than two weeks before the federal ComEd Four bribery conspiracy trial, and court documents reveal that Mike Madigan’s confidant and ComEd lobbyist Michael McClain was questioned twice by the FBI.

And former U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger lands a book deal.
