Use Crescent Moon To Spot Trio of Planets This Week
Use Crescent Moon To Spot Trio of Planets This Week -May 2024
May 13, 2026 12:39 PM

Look to the night sky this week forfascinating celestial show: All of the solar system’s inner planets — counting the Earth underfoot — will be visible.

Because planet-spotting, especially with the naked eye, can be challenging, use the crescent moon as a guide.

On Wednesday evening at twilight, look for the moon near Venus, low in the western sky. The planet sets before nightfall, so don’t wait for darkness to catch a glimpse.

On Thursday, the moon will pass by Mercury and on Saturday, the crescent will pass Mars. Mercury is as bright as the most brilliant stars and Mars has its telltale red glow. Both will hang around after sunset, making it possible to spot them with the eye alone.
