Tom Holland Calls Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ an “Absolute Masterpiece”: “Blown Away”-May 2024

Tom Holland has watched Christopher Nolans The Odyssey and has some epic praise for the upcoming mythic adventure film.

Speaking to GQ, the actor said, I can tell you that it is an absolute masterpiece, and Im taking myself out of that equation. Holland added the fantastic film was full of stunning practical effects.

Its unlike anything that Ive ever seen before, Holland said. I think when I saw the movie, I found myself asking a question that I havent asked about a movie for a long time, which is, How did you do that?' Continued Holland: There were certain sequences in the movie where Im watching it and Im just sort of thinking like, How on earth has he done that? That has to be CG. And then after [watching] the movie [I asked Nolan], That was definitely CG, right? And hes like, No, no, no, thats all in camera effects. Very planned, very prepared. So I think fans are going to be really, really blown away by the set pieces and sequences throughout the movie, because even as someone that was there on the day and was in the film, I was absolutely blown away by the scale, the scope, his ability to navigate such an intricate and heartfelt story in the middle of this insane kind of action movie. So its one of my proudest achievements as an actor and Im so touched that Chris gave me the opportunity to be in the film.

Holland also talked about his upcoming Sony-Marvel sequel Spider-Man: Brand New Day, for which he was recently shooting brand new footage.

The actor noted that he was in London filming additional scenes for the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed movie, which is released in theaters July 31 (while The Odyssey is released one week earlier, July 17).

Calling the new footage really, really fun, Holland emphasized that the reshoots didnt mean that the film wasnt already good.

I can positively say that the stuff were doing, we dont need, he said. The movie works and sings as it is. Were just adding the icing on the cake in certain areas. Were finding some ways to add a little bit more humor. Were layering in a villain plotline in a new way and some really fun stuff.

Marvel boss Kevin Feige is an advocate for having a flexible and evolving script and making changes during filming and after principal photography, a process he calls plus-ing.

Last July, Feige described to The Hollywood Reporter how there was plus-ing constantly on the set of Avengers: Doomsday.

Theres plus-ing happening every day on theAvengers: Doomsdayset right now, and it is amazing to watch because what those filmmakers, those actors, both the ones that are playing these characters for the first or second time and the one playing them for the 10th or 12th time, are the best in the world at it, and know these characters so well, said Feige. So if they have an idea, you want to listen to it and you want to adjust to it and you want to improve it. I wouldnt want to change that.
