How to play QuordleQuordle lives on the Merriam-Webster website. A new puzzle goes live every day. If youve never played, its a twist on The New York Times daily Wordle game, in which you have a limited number of attempts to guess a five-letter mystery word. In Quordle, though, youre simultaneously solving four Wordle-style puzzles, and each of your guesses gets applied to the four puzzles simultaneously. Due to the increased difficulty, Quordle grants you nine guesses (12 if you play on Chill mode, or eight if you play on Extreme), rather than Wordles six.

To start, guess a five-letter word. The letters of the word in each of the four quadrants will turn green if theyre correct, yellow if you have the right letter in the wrong place, or gray if the letter isnt in that secret word at all.

How I solved todays QuordleSLATE and MOUND are my starter words. SLATE got me to the finish line in the upper left. SKATE seems like the mostly likely answer there. Yep.

Ill try GLIDE for the bottom left. One off. Hmm, what could that be? I dont think FLIDE or PLIDE are words. Maybe its a repeated vowel, but I dont think ELIDE is a word either? Ill come back to that.

The bottom right looks like its probably HOTEL. Nope, but getting there. TOWEL.

I thought the upper right might be AMEND, but I already used up N. Oh, maybe DREAM? There it is.

Back to this pesky bottom left. The only word of the previous three I identified that Quordle actually recognizes is ELIDE, so lets try that. That was it.

What do you think so far? Apparently it means to omit (a sound or syllable) when speaking. Oh, I think I know the word elision, the noun form, from a phonetics class. That describes how people often pronounce the word twenty as twenny and are eliding that t. (Which isnt a bad thing, its just describing a thing that happens when people speak.)

The best starters tend to contain common letters, to increase the chances of getting yellow and green squares to guide your guessing. (And if you get all grays when guessing common letters, thats still excellent information to help you rule out possibilities.) There isnt a single best starting word, but The New York Timess Wordle analysis bot has suggested starting with one of these:

Meanwhile, an MIT analysis found that youll eliminate the most possibilities in the first round by starting with one of these:

Other good picks might be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO get more vowels in play, but you could argue that its better to start with an emphasis on consonants, using a starter like RENTS or CLAMP. Choose your strategy, and see how it plays out.
