There’s Still Time to Vote: How to Make Sure Your Vote is Counted-December 2024
Dec 17, 2025 6:57 AM

Election Day is around the corner, but if you haven’t yet made it to the polls, don’t fret — there’s still plenty of time to cast your ballot.

“If you have a vote-by-mail ballot in your possession, make sure you complete that and I encourage you to turn it in to a secure drop box at one of our 51 locations around the city,” said Chicago Board of Elections Commissioner Jonathan Swain. “We will definitely will have drop boxes on Election Day at Wrigley Field (and) Guaranteed Rate Field. In Illinois, if the ballot is received by 14 days after the election, the ballot will be counted.”

Swain says that if you plan to vote on Tuesday — Election Day — the CBOE has taken all appropriate measures to protect voters and workers from the coronavirus.

“All of our polling places have been expanded to have enough space,” he said. “We’re making sure they have the appropriate PPE, shields, face masks, hand sanitizer and everything you need and making sure we’re being diligent about keeping 6 feet distance.”

As far as how long Illinois voters should expect to wait to hear results, Swain says that everything depends on how close the races are — but in Chicago, he reports that 70% of the vote-by-mail ballots that were sent out have been returned.
