A Chicago police officer struck Chicago Police Board President Ghian Foreman with a baton as Foreman tried to diffuse a tense situation between a protester and a police officer at a Hyde Park protest. Mayor Lori Lightfoot is calling for the firing of the Chicago police officer who flipped off protesters and all officers who hid their badge numbers from protesters.

Meanwhile, a heated discussion between Lightfoot and aldermen turned profane on Sunday as tensions rose around the city. Lightfoot wants to see what happens with protests this weekend before lifting the city’s curfew as Chicago takes cautious steps toward reopening and rebuilding.

The majority of protests have been peaceful this week after the unrest and some looting last weekend, which was Chicago’s most violent weekend of the year.

Tensions also escalated between blacks and Hispanics, but then eased with a Black Lives Matter march on 26th Street in Little Village. And Lightfoot vows to expedite police reforms amid her tense relations with the police union.
