The Week in Review: Teachers Strike Looms, McDonald Records Released-February 2024
Feb 22, 2026 4:35 AM

The city’s law department this week released of thousands of pages from Inspector General Joe Ferguson’s report on the 2014 fatal shooting of black teen Laquan McDonald by white Chicago police Officer Jason Van Dyke, who is now serving an 81-month prison sentence after being convicted of second-degree murder for the killing.

All eyes are on negotiations between Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Teachers Union as a potential teachers strike is just days away.

Illinois state Sen. Martin Sandoval on Friday steps down as transportation committee chairman following the release of unredacted FBI search warrants that show federal officials looking for evidence of public corruption.

And in sports, the Chicago Fire, the city’s major league soccer team, returns to Soldier Field after playing in the southwest suburbs for more than a decade. Meanwhile, the Bears lick their wounds after a loss in London.
