The Week in Review: Probe Into Madigan’s Conduct Begins-August 2024

A rarely used bipartisan legislative disciplinary panel convened in Springfield to examine whether Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan’s conduct in the ComEd bribery scandal was “unbecoming” of a legislator.

Gov. Pritzker stops Illinois’ pot license lottery amid accusations that the social equity applicant slots aren’t being awarded fairly as two applicants file a lawsuit. U.S. Attorney General William Barr comes to Chicago to talk up Operation Legend gains with U.S. Attorney in the Northern District of Illinois John Lausch, but Mayor Lori Lightfoot blasts Barr’s claims as “factually inaccurate.”

President Donald Trump is doing damage control after journalist Bob Woodward releases snippets from interviews of the president saying he knew how dangerous the coronavirus was but continued to downplay it publicly.

Chicago Public Schools starts the fall semester remotely, battling a 10% lower attendance rate than last year’s in-person first day of school. Chicago starts to slowly replace lead water service pipes. And the City Council approves a plan to help keep Woodlawn residents near the planned Obama Center in their homes.
