The Week in Review: Pritzker and Bailey Sling Mud in Debate; Lightfoot Unveils $16.4B Budget Plan
The Week in Review: Pritzker and Bailey Sling Mud in Debate; Lightfoot Unveils $16.4B Budget Plan-December 2024
Dec 19, 2025 7:17 AM

Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker and his Republican challenger state Sen. Darren Bailey each accused the other of lying about everything from abortion to crime in the first televised debate of this governor’s race.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot proposes a $16.4 billion city budget and drops plans for an inflation-linked property tax hike amid widespread opposition in City Hall to raising taxes in an election year.

Meanwhile, the Latino Leadership Council encourages U.S. Rep. Jesus ‘Chuy’ Garcia to run for mayor, but this time he would not have the backing of Chicago’s powerful teachers union, who have already voted to endorse Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson. Johnson has yet to declare that he is running.

And in sports, the White Sox end a disappointing season in fitting style, losing 10-1 to the Minnesota Twins. The Chicago Bears are still looking to ignite a spark in their misfiring offense as they travel to Minnesota to face the Vikings on Sunday.
