The Week in Review: President Joe Biden Warns of Threats to Democracy-March 2024
Mar 31, 2026 2:37 AM

President Joe Biden makes a primetime speech warning that MAGA Republicans represent an existential threat to American democracy, but the major networks tune the president out – opting instead for reruns.

And as Biden warns that American democracy is in peril, a new YouGov/Economist poll finds 43% of Americans – and a majority of Republicans – believe a civil war is “somewhat likely” in the next decade.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott buses migrants to Chicago. Mayor Lori Lightfoot decries the move as a “stunt” and says Abbott is “a man without any morals, humanity, or shame.”

And Ald. Tom Tunney (44th Ward) becomes the latest aldermen to say he won’t see re-election to the City Council – but will he run for mayor? Meanwhile, council members must decide on whether to accept a near 10% pay rise ahead of elections in February.
