As 2021 draws to a close, the 2022 election is already well underway and Chicago’s election in early 2023 is looming on the horizon. On a special holiday edition of “The Week in Review,” a look at what offices are on the ballot, who’s running, and the key issues at stake.

A slate of Republican candidates have lined up to challenge Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s reelection bid – and questions are swirling about whether U.S. Reps. Adam Kinzinger or Rodney Davis might jump in.

Four Democratic hopefuls and one Republican are vying to replace long-serving Secretary of State Jesse White. With new legislative and congressional maps in place, members of the General Assembly and the state’s congressional delegation must decide if and where to run.

At the Cook County level, board president Toni Preckwinkle is running for her fourth term. Assessor Fritz Kaegi tries to hold on to his job amid a challenge from MWRD board president Kari Steele.

With Chicago’s next municipal election in early 2023, the coming year will see the races get into high gear.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot hasn’t yet announced whether she’ll run for reelection, but does say she welcomes a challenge from combative police union president John Catanzara. Chicago’s alderpeople will face their first election with the still-to-be-determined new ward maps.
