The Week in Review: Lightfoot Unveils Recovery Plan
The Week in Review: Lightfoot Unveils Recovery Plan-May 2024
May 6, 2025 4:07 PM

Mayor Lori Lightfoot unveils a plan to revive and rebuild Chicago in the wake of the pandemic’s devastating economic toll. The number of COVID-19 cases ticks up in Illinois as Gov. J.B. Pritzker calls for a national mask mandate. Meanwhile, Chicago beaches remain closed due to the coronavirus, but some splash pads and cooling centers open temporarily to help residents stay safe in the sweltering weather.

With a spike in deadly violence, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown has revived special roving police units which have been the subject of controversy in the past.

President Donald Trump is pushing for schools to reopen this fall, but Lightfoot says the decision should be made locally.

The dairy business owned by perennial GOP candidate and multimillionaire Jim Oberweis got millions in federal Paycheck Protection Program funds, along with other politically connected businesses in Illinois. The Willow Creek Community Church, one of the country’s largest megachurches — and one formerly embroiled in a #MeToo scandal — also got millions. Chicago Public Schools is calling for a probe of some local charter schools that got federal PPP cash.

Trump and FOX host Tucker Carlson attack Illinois U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth as her chances for being Joe Biden’s vice-presidential pick increase.
