Less than a month after his tearful resignation speech, Chicago Police SuperintendentEddie Johnson is fired by Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who said the city’s top cop misled her and the public after he was found asleep in a vehicle following a night of drinking in October.
Lightfoot’s dismissal of Johnson, who made his retirement official on Wednesday, follows aninspector general’s reportwhich the mayor declined to publicly release out of respect for Johnson’s family.
Sources tellthe Chicago Tribunefederal authorities are probing the connections between powerful Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan and ComEd lobbyists, including longtime Madigan confidant Michael McClain.
Ahead of the state’s legalization of recreational marijuana on Jan. 1, Lightfoot and interim Police Superintendent Charlie Beck say Chicago policewill not ticket peoplesmoking marijuana on balconies or in backyards, despite interpretations of the state law deeming those places public.
