The Week in Review: COVID-19 Cases Soar As Testing Increases-April 2024

On Friday, Illinois reported 3,137 new cases of COVID-19, the highest number of cases in a 24-hour period since the outbreak began, and 105 additional deaths.

Statewide, 56,055 people have now tested positive for the virus, and 2,457 people have died.

Officials say the numbers are increasing because the state is conducting more than 14,000 tests each day. Despite the jump in cases, officials announced Friday that the field hospital at McCormick Place will close, having treated less than three dozen patients. Also on Friday, hundreds of people protested in the Loop and in Springfield, demanding the state fully reopen. Some businesses did reopen Friday but with strict social distancing guidelines and face coverings a requirement.
