Bleecker Street and ShivHans Pictures released the trailer for Andrew Ahns upcoming romantic comedy The Wedding Banquet on Monday morning.
Starring Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Chan and Han Gi-Chan, the Seattle-set film is a reimagining of Ang Lees 1993 film of the same name. The trailer shows two couples Lee (Gladstone) and Angela (Tran), and Chris (Yang) and Min (Han) at a crossroads. Lee and Angela want to start a family but dont have the money for IVF treatments. Chris and Min want to stay together, but Mins visa is about to run out and he hasnt come out to his grandmother, who will will cut him off if he does. Min, from a wealthy family in Korea, suggests Angela marries him to solve the visa (and grandmother) problem in exchange for him paying for the couples IVF treatments. The film, which premiered at Sundance last month, also stars Joan Chen as Angelas mother, May, and Youn Yuh-Jung as Mins grandmother.
The trailer shows May taking it hard that her daughter might be marrying a man, even if its for the cause of helping a gay couple stay together as Trans Angela suggests. Lee and Angela force May to delete all evidence of her LGBTQIA-allyship on social media. Can I still post Instagram stories? May questions her daughter and her daughters partner in the trailer. Do you want grandchildren? Angela questions before May decides to just delete Instagram.
Mins grandmother makes a surprise visit, causing the crew to de-queer the house. Hijinks ensue as Min and Angela try to convince his grandmother of the validity of their engagement. I dont even want to be an American, Hans Min shouts at one point in the trailer. Your trains are so slow, and I never know how music to tip.
James Schamus co-wrote the script alongside Ahn. The Wedding Banquet is set to be released in theaters on April 18.
