Prime Video has officially confirmed The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power for a third season.

The Rings of Poweris in preproduction, and filming of the hit fantasy drama will begin this spring at the shows new production home at Shepperton Studios in the United Kingdom. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the renewal news since the shows second-season finale aired in October.

The Hollywood Reporter can reveal the show is executing a major time jump going into the new episodes, with Sauron now crafting the iconic One Ring. Here is the exclusive logline: Jumping forward several years from the events of season 2, season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last. The War of the Elves took place during author J.R.R. Tolkiens Second Age, and was the first major battle in Middle-earth against Sauron (Charlie Vickers). Its a battle that occurs before the clash seen in the prologue of The Lord of the Rings movies, which was the War of the Last Alliance.

The production also announced its director lineup for the third season, which includes two returning names and one new one. International Emmy award nominee Charlotte Brandstrom (Shgun), who directed two episodes during season one and then directed (or co-directed) five episodes during season two, is back for a third round. Sanaa Hamri (The Wheel of Time),who directed three episodes in season two, is also back. While Stefan Schwartz (The Boys, The Walking Dead) is the newcomer on board for season three.

The first season of The Rings of Power remains Prime Videos biggest TV premiere, while the second season is the streamers most-watched returning season by number of hours watched. Amazon says 170 million viewers worldwide have checked out the show and its been one of the strongest drivers for new Prime membership sign-ups.

The Rings of Poweris produced by showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. They are joined by executive producers Lindsey Weber, Justin Doble, Kate Hazell, and executive producer-director Charlotte Brandstrom. Matthew Penry-Davey is producer and Ally OLeary, Tim Keene, and Andrew Lee are co-producers
