A 17-year-old male has been arrested and charged in connection with the killing of a 70-year-old woman during an attempted carjacking on Chicago’s Far South Side earlier this month.

Chicago Police Department Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan on Friday announced that a juvenile has been charged with first-degree murder in theshooting death of Yvonne Ruzich, who was killed as she sat in her car outside her work in the early morning hours of Aug. 16.

Because the suspect is a juvenile, his name has not been released by the CPD.

According to Deenihan, Ruzich was sitting in her car with her stepson at around 4:30 a.m. in the 13300 block of South Baltimore Avenue when they saw two other vehicles drive by, make a U-turn and park behind their car.

Deenihan said the stepson realized “something wasn’t right” as two people got out of one of the other vehicles and began walking toward himself and Ruzich. He told Ruzich to “drive away, drive away,” and as they attempted to do so, one of the individuals fired shots into their car.

Ruzich’s vehicle crashed nearby, and Deenihan said the offenders then drove up and fired “several more times.”

Investigators tracked the other vehicle used in the shooting and discovered it had previously been carjacked, and the suspects involved were responsible for several different carjackings, according to Deenihan.

Four vehicles were recovered during this investigation, he said. The CPD had published video of the shooting, and Deenihan said cooperating witnesses were eventually able to identify the suspects.

The teen who has been charged was arrested Thursday in the 10600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue. He is expected to appear in bond court Saturday.

While the other suspect seen in the video has not been arrested, Deenihan said “We know who we’re looking for.”
