TCM Classic Film Festival: Michael Mann, Rob Reiner, Paul Schrader, Kathy Bates, Aaron Sorkin to Attend-May 2024

Michael Mann, Rob Reiner, Kathy Bates, Aaron Sorkin, Keir Dullea, Sean Young, Barry Bostwick and Eric Braedon are headed to the 16th annual TCM Classic Film Festival this month.

Reiner will chat with Kathy Bates and Aaron Sorkin before screenings of his dramas Misery (1990) and The American President (1995), and for the closing night film, Michael Mann will be on hand for a presentation of his action-packed Heat (1995), whose memorable performances include one from the late Val Kilmer.

The festival takes place April 24-27 in Hollywood. Other presenters announced Thursday to talk about the making of their films include Dullea for2001: A Space Odyssey(1968), Bostwick for The Rocky Horror Picture Show(1975) and Young for Blade Runner(1982).

Danny Huston will introduce Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison(1957) a film directed by his father, John Huston Alexander Payne will get the audience pumped for Ben-Hur(1959), and Paul Schrader will set upHud(1963).

Plus, the always entertaining duo of sound effects ace Ben Burtt and visual effects guru Craig Barron will return to the fest to present Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) alongside Braedon.

For the first time since the 1950s, according to TCM, films will be shown in the VistaVision format. (As a news release explains it, Unlike standard 35mm film, which runs vertically through the camera, VistaVision shoots the negative horizontally, exposing the image across two 35mm frames.)

In collaboration with Paramount, the movies being shown in VistaVision known for stunning clarity and the Perspecta sound system are Were No Angels(1955) and Gunfight at the O.K. Corral(1957).

Special projectors will be employed, and Lol Crawley, who just received the best cinematography Oscar for his work on The Brutalist, will be there.

Courtesy Everett Collection The fest also will celebrate the 90th anniversary of the British Film Institutes National Archive with screenings of The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933), introduced by BFI head of conservation Kieron Webb; To Be or Not to Be (1942); Blithe Spirit(1945), with an introduction from Christine Ebersole; Mildred Pierce(1945), using a rare nitrate release print; Edge of the City (1957); and Jaws (1975), shown in Technicolor with an appearance by Lorraine Gary.

Club TCM conversations at the Hollywood Roosevelt will include those with BFI CEO Ben Roberts, previously announced honoree Michael Schultz and for you obituary readers out there celebrity-cemetery sleuths Karie Bible and Steven Bingen.

The fest opens at the TCL Chinese Theatre with a screening of The Empire Strikes Back (1980), with George Lucas in attendance. There will also be a handprint and footprint ceremony with Michelle Pfeiffer and the presentation of the Robert Osborne Award to George Stevens Jr.
