A new trailer for Paramount+s next Star Trek venture, Starfleet Academy, was released at New York Comic Con on Saturday.

The video (watch it below) gives a deeper dive into the franchises first live-action drama series focused on Starfleet members in their early twenties. The company also revealed the shows premiere date: Jan. 15.

The shows first teaser trailer received a rather divided reaction online (one wag on YouTube dubbed it TikTok Space Prom). This new look dials back the Gen Z emoting and ramps up the dramatic intensity with a dash of apparent cadet sex and a furry and furious Paul Giamatti (who plays a recurring alien villain in the show) included for good measure. The series stars Holly Hunter as the Academys chancellor and also features Robert Picardoreprising his role as The Doctor, and Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) as a recurring special guest star in season one. Academy stars Sandro Rosta, Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Dian and Zo Steiner. Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau serve as co-showrunners and executive producers alongside executive producers Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa and John Weber.

The trailer comes at what feels like a transitional moment for Paramount+s Trek franchise, as previous shows Discovery, Star Trek: Picard and the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy have all ended. Earlier this year, Paramount+ also announced that its popular flagship Trek show, Strange New Worlds which just returned for season three has been renewed for a fifth and final season. There are other projects in the works as well, but Academy is currently Paramount+s best hope for the franchises future and for luring, well, the next generation.
