Spotlight Politics: Trump-Backed Bailey to Face Pritzker in Fall-July 2024
Jul 20, 2026 6:57 PM

In this week’s edition ofSpotlight Politics:

Last night’s primary elections and how the key races are shaping up for November, including the Governor’s race, where Trump-endorsed Darren Bailey will go up against Democratic incumbent J.B. Pritzker. Bailey saw-off the well-funded challenge of Richard Irvin, who was backed by $50 million from hedge-fund billionaire Ken Griffin.

In the Secretary of State’s race, Alexi Giannoulias overcomes some political baggage to emerge from a four-candidate field in the Democratic primary as he bids to succeed longtime incumbent Jesse White. He’ll be facing Illinois State Rep. Dan Brady, who defeated former U.S. Attorney John Milhiser in the Republican primary.

And we’ll also get the Spotlight team’s take on yet more explosive revelations from the Jan. 6 hearings in Washington, where an aide to President Donald Trump’s chief of staff described the chaotic scenes inside the White House as a violent, armed mob attacked the U.S. Capitol.

Our politics team of Amanda Vinicky, Paris Schutz and Heather Cherone takes on those stories and more.
