Spotlight Politics: Illinois Finds $1.5 Billion in Budget Money-March 2024
Mar 1, 2026 2:31 AM

Our politics team of Carol Marin, Paris Schutz and Amanda Vinicky digests the top political stories of the week in this edition of Spotlight Politics.

Everything old is new again: Illinois has pension problems and south suburban lawmakers are fighting for a third Chicago airport in Peotone. Meanwhile, Chicago Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot is gallivanting in Washington, D.C., as her predecessor, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, tries to burnish his legacy at home.

And, a new wrinkle on the age-old tale of Illinois’ pension mess: The state actually found $1.5 billion in budget money it was not banking on. Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced that the money would go toward payments into the state pension systems, forgoing the need for a previously planned – and panned – “pension holiday.”
