Santa Barbara Film Fest: ‘Sentimental Value’ Star Stellan Skarsgård Tapped for Montecito Award-March 2024
Mar 7, 2026 10:30 PM

Stellan Skarsgrd, the veteran actor who is poised to land the first Oscar nomination of his career for his widely hailed turn in the Swedish film Sentimental Value, will be the 2026 recipient of the Santa Barbara International Film Festivals Montecito Award, the fest announced on Thursday.

The 74-year-old will be feted with a clips-and-conversation career tribute at Santa Barbaras historic Arlington Theater on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2026.

Skarsgrd, the patriarch of a family of film actors, is known for his work in art house films (e.g. his five collaborations with Lars von Trier, most notably 1996s Breaking the Waves), studio movies (e.g. installments of the Dune, Mamma Mia!, Pirates of the Caribbean and MCU franchises) and prestige TV shows (e.g. the 2019 limited series Chernobyl, for which he won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Emmy, and the 2022-2025 drama series Andor). In Sentimental Value which was co-written and directed by Joachim Trier, and which Sweden has submitted as its entry for the best international feature Oscar competition Skarsgrd plays Gustav Borg, a veteran filmmaker hoping to reunite with his estranged daughters (Renate Reinsve and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) and trying to reclaim his lost fame by making one last film starring an American actress (Elle Fanning).

Ive been a big fan of Stellan since his work in Breaking the Waves, said SBIFF executive director Roger Durling said in a statement. From that point on, I was drawn to his performances because of his versatility and his deep emotional delivery. He makes it look easy to embody both complex protagonists and nuanced villains with gravitas and an ability to convey profound emotional depth.

The Montecito Award is named after one of the most beautiful and stylish areas in Santa Barbara. Past recipients include Colman Domingo, Jeffrey Wright, Angela Bassett, Penlope Cruz, Amanda Seyfried, Lupita Nyongo, Melissa McCarthy, Saoirse Ronan, Isabelle Huppert, Sylvester Stallone, Jennifer Aniston, Oprah Winfrey, Daniel Day-Lewis, Geoffrey Rush, Julianne Moore, Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts and Javier Bardem.
