Preview of State of the Union 2012
Preview of State of the Union 2012-December 2024
Dec 20, 2025 6:07 AM

President Obama will advocate for government’s role in creating economic equality in Tuesday night’s State of the Union address, laying out a “blueprint for an economy that’s built to last.”

In a video preview of his address, Obama said the speech will “bookend” his speech in Kansas last month, which made the case for government regulation to ensure “fairness.”

“This is a make-or-break moment for the middle class and folks trying to work their way into the middle class,” Obama said in the preview video. Check below for the full video.

His central focus will be “rebuilding an economy where hard work pays off and responsibility is rewarded—and an America where everybody gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everybody plays by the same set of rules.”

Just as in Kansas, Obama is expected to push for a tax code reform which will raise rates on the highest earners. He has also been calling for “insourcing” jobs back to America in recent weeks and will likely have new proposals to incentivize companies to do so.

According to his preview, he will also address clean-energy incentives and job training programs.

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels will present the Republican rebuttal.

Northwestern law professor Jason DeSanto will join us on Chicago Tonight at 7:00 pm for a preview of Obama's address.
