For Pamela Adlon, starting to watch a new show can be a treacherous thing.
I have OCD so if I start something, Im screwed. I know Ive got to see this through, the multi-hyphenate explained, kicking off the jury press conference for this years Series Mania.
Adlon, a multiple-Emmy nominee for her writing and acting work on FXs Better Things and Louie, has been binging on some the best in global TV as head of of the international jury at the international television festival, which runs through March 28 in Lille, France. She joined her fellow jurors Downton Abbey and Better Call Saul director Minkie Spiro, award-winning French actress Karin Viard (The Blier Family, Polisse), U.S.-Argentine actor Ignacio Serricchio (Bones, The Young and the Restless), and French musician and composer Victor Le Masne to talk up the small screen highlights of this years competition. Among the higher-profile series screening in Lille as part of the Series Mania international competition are Joe Wrights Mussolini: Son of the Century, a historical biopic starring Luca Marinelli (The Old Guard, The Eight Mountains) as fascist leader Benito Mussolini; The Peacock+ crime drama Long Bright River, starring Amanda Seyfried; Cooper Raiffs dramedy Hal Harper featuring Raiff, Lili Reinhart, and Mark Ruffalo; and Kabul, a drama tracing the fall of the Afghan capital to the Taliban following the withdrawal of U.S. troops in 2021.
For me as an American to be in this venue, watching these shows in other languages, other than English that is, you just hope they reach the States because they are so exceptional, said Adlon.
We are having debates about how the European market would receive a show versus a U.S., and its brilliant, said Spiro, were so comfortable with each other, we can have difficult conversations and challenge each other.
Adlon, who recently made her feature directing debut with Babes, starring Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau, teased some of her upcoming projects, including a remake of Jorge Gaggeros 2004 Argentine hit Cama Adentro, currently at Searchlight Pictures and set to star Glenn Close and Melissa McCarthy as a wealthy woman and her live-in housekeeper forced to adjust when hit by financial ruin; and a feature adaptation of Ariel Leves memoir, An Abbreviated Life, with Rebecca Hall attached to star. In front of the camera, Adlon will appear in Mid-Cenutry Modern, the new multi-camera sitcom from Will Grace creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, starring Nathan Lane and Matt Bomer, which Hulu has ordered to series.
Its a real, true, old-school television experience, and its like a gift. Were pinching ourselves, said Adlon about Mid-Century Modern. And its so gay, its the best. Its the gayest shit in the world, and we need that right now!
