Netflix expects its programming slate to return to close to normalcy in 2025, after saying its 2024 slate was patchier than normal due to the Hollywood strikes.
Speaking on Netflixs third quarter earnings call, co-CEO Ted Sarandos said some of its popular shows including Cobra Kai and Emily in Paris as well as newer shows such as Perfect Couple and Nobody Wants This were scheduled to air much earlier in the yearbut were delayed due to impacts from the strike.
The first half of this year, our lineup was much lumpier than we liked and that was primarily because of the work stoppage, Sarandos said. It did hit [US, Canada Australia] the hardest, but there were some effects of that felt in production around the world. The company is now moving closer to a more normalized output schedule, with television series more on track than film, Sarandos said. But neither area is yet fully recovered. This has disrupted the overall goal of Netflix, he noted.
Our aim here is to always have a very steady drum beat of great new TV shows and films and games for our members to watch throughout the year. A drum beat so steady that when youre watching the last episode of whatever youre watching, you start expecting the next thing to be great too, he said.
The company was also contending with a change in leadership, with Dan Lin hired as head of film after Scott Stuber stepped down, which Sarandos said also changed the cadence of release.
Despite the patchiness, Netflix still added five million new subscribers in the most recent quarter and saw healthy engagement, with around two hours per day per paid membership on average. The company also saw large year-over-year increases in its revenue, to reach $9.83 billion, and in its operating income, which hit $2.91 billion.
Sarandos noted a strong Q4 slate coming, with programming including the action film Carry-On, The Piano Lesson, Emilia Prez and more. In 2025, when Netflix expects to be largely back to normal, programming includes a new Knives Out movie, Guillermo del Toros Frankenstein and The Electric State, a new film from the Russo Brothers starring Millie Bobby Brown.
